Identify genuine surface feeding
A carp cruising near the top is not always willing to take a bait. Watch whether fish repeatedly take natural food or free offerings before committing to a hookbait.
Choose an appropriate controller
A surface controller or other permitted presentation can help cast a floating bait without weighing the hook down. Keep hooklink, hook and bait balanced and avoid dangerous tangles.
Feed with restraint
Introduce a small number of permitted floaters and observe the fish response. Increase only when fish are feeding confidently and birds are not competing for the bait.
Strike and play sensibly
Visual takes can tempt anglers into snatching the rod. Maintain control, use tackle suitable for the fish and hazards, and avoid playing fish through obstacles.
