Zig Rigs: Fishing for Carp Off the Bottom

Zig rigs suspend a small hookbait above the lakebed, targeting fish holding at a chosen depth rather than feeding on the bottom.

    When zigs are worth trying

If carp are showing high in the water or weather suggests they are suspended, a correctly presented zig can be an alternative to a bottom rig. Start from observed activity and sensible depths.

    Hook and line choice

Zig fishing commonly uses fine but appropriately strong hooklink and compact hooks. Match line strength, hook size and any foam or artificial bait to the venue rules and fish expected.

    Fixed and adjustable zigs

A fixed zig holds bait at a set length above the lead. Adjustable systems change the depth using purpose-made components. Learn one safe system properly before using the more complex arrangement.

    Presentation and bite detection

Long hooklinks can tangle during a cast. Use suitable anti-tangle arrangements, assess the hookbait position and check the complete lead-release path. A long wait does not prove the bait is in the right layer.

    Questions

Do zigs only work in summer?

No. They can work whenever fish occupy midwater.

Do I have to use foam?

No. Suitable small buoyant hookbaits may also work where allowed.
